The Sanskrit term "Asana" is almost always translated as pose or posture.
In my opinion, this translation, because it is so simplistic, does not include the element of thought or consciousness that must accompany each movement, each asana being thus beyond the intrinsic relationship that the yoga postures contribute and make us develop - the connection with the body, the breath, and the mind. In reality, the final posture of an asana is achieved when we obtain a correct positioning of all parts of the body, with full awareness and intelligence.
Nowadays, 84,000 asanas are recognized, of which 84 are the most important, 32 fundamental and 7 are elementary in the practice of yoga, in fact, a great evolution since according to Hatha Yoga Pradipika (the oldest existing text of Hatha Yoga), which contemplated only 16 poses, 6 of which were seated postures, in order to prepare the body for meditation. The vast majority of asanas are associated with nature, symbols, and animals.
Asanas promote the cleansing and toning of the body internally and externally, in addition to massaging the internal organs and strengthening and realigning the spine, they also increase physical strength as well as flexibility.
At a psychic level, they calm and free the mind, stabilize the nervous system, and help to reduce stress and anxiety.
